US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has accused Harvard University of being a hub for “hate-America activism,” leading the US Department of Defense to cut academic ties with the university.<\/p>\n
According to the department, the Pentagon will terminate its academic partnership with the university in the Fall, allowing any active military personnel to complete their coursework.<\/p>\n
Hegseth said, the Pentagon would discontinue graduate-level military training, fellowships, and certificate programs with the university in a video that was uploaded on social platform X.<\/p>\n
He claimed that Harvard has turned into a “factory for woke ideology and a breeding ground for anti-American radicals,” which is in opposition to the department’s emphasis on “lethality” and “deterrence.”<\/p>\n
Harvard has been threatened with funding cuts by the Trump administration, which claims the university is “woke” and anti-Semitic.<\/p>\n
President Donald Trump declared last week that he was suing Harvard for $1 billion in damages after the New York Times revealed that his administration had to withdraw their demand for a $200 million payment in talks with the university. The university is accused by Trump of “feeding a lot of nonsense” to the news organization.<\/p>\n
Hegseth stated in his announcement, which was posted late on Friday, that he was thinking of cutting ties between the defense department and other prestigious universities.<\/p>\n
However, he mainly addressed Harvard, citing its lengthy history of ties to the US military dating back to George Washington, the country’s first president. In the hopes that Harvard would better understand and value our warrior class, this department has been sending our best and brightest officers there for far too long, Hegseth stated.<\/p>\n
He said, “Instead, too many of our officers came back looking too much like Harvard \u2014 heads full of globalist and radical ideologies that do not improve our fighting ranks.”<\/p>\n
He described Harvard as “One of the red-hot centers of hate-America activism”.<\/p>\n
Hegseth stated the Pentagon was cutting off Harvard due to some research programs that had cooperated with the Chinese Communist Party, in addition to criticizing the university’s instruction.<\/p>\n
According to the New York Times, Chinese foundations, corporate philanthropists, and government agencies gave Harvard $560 million in grants and contracts between 2010 and 2025.<\/p>\n
In addition, Hegseth charged that the university “allowed attacks on Jews” and fostered a “campus environment that celebrated Hamas”.<\/p>\n
Harvard’s handling of pro-Palestinian demonstrations, which took place on other college campuses in the months following the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, has drawn repeated criticism from the Trump administration.<\/p>\n
In 2013, Hegseth graduated with a Master of Public Policy from Harvard’s esteemed Kennedy School, which is regularly visited by federal employees, including military personnel.
